louis-vuitton-world-tour

In September 2012, Louis Vuitton and Editions Xavier Barral will publish an original travel book, a genuine journey around the world in twenty-one stopovers with 1,000 hotel labels from the collection constituted by Gaston-Louis Vuitton. Formerly stuck to the luggage of travelers, these small posters tell us their fabulous adventure and inspire an initiatory journey, a Grand Tour back to the mythical past of the Art of travel.
Trunk-maker and traveller, Gaston-Louis Vuitton, grandson of Louis Vuitton, has throughout his life put together a unique collection of 3,000 hotel labels. Stuck to the luggage by hotel staff for advertising purposes, these labels were witness to the wonderful journeys travelled by the owners of the trunks and made people dream of distant lands. From Paris to Rio de Janeiro, from London to Tokyo, they invite us on a journey around the world in twenty-one stopovers by following the course of the large steamships of the first half of the 20th century. Exotic, poetic, entertaining, over 1,000 labels from this fabulous collection are presented here for the first time.
Primarily of a promotional function, each hotel label takes us back to a time gone by, concealing stories, memories, and anecdotes and has become symbolic. By following in their footsteps, Francisca Mattéoli, a great traveller and author of travel stories, opens the doors of legendary hotels and palaces such as the Hôtel Plaza Athénée in Paris and the Raffles Hotel in Singapore. These mythical places where artists, intellectuals, aristocrats, writer- travellers and politicians of the early 20th century gathered set the

Art of travel against a context of development in tourism. Marked by twenty-one stopovers, from Paris to the “Mediterranean sunshine”, via “the magic of the Orient” and the “lands of the rising sun”, this book is also illustrated with visuals from the time.
Available in September 2012 in Louis Vuitton stores, this fine book is presented in a limited edition boxed set containing a map of the world and a notebook with 11 self-adhesive hotel labels. By offering an unprecedented journey through space and time, it constitutes a genuine treasure trunk.
